Sunday Women Only Skate
June 5th, 2008 by MarthaNew for 2010: Women Only Skate to be held once a month on the last Sunday of the Month at 5:00. We’ll have our skate, then go out for dinner afterward.
2010 Dates: April 25th, May 30th, June 27th, July 25th, August 29th, and Sept 26th.
Like inline skating? Do you want to learn to skate in paceline and work towards a personal best in the St. Paul Inline Marathon or Northshore? Have you tried some races and enjoyed the experience? Thinking about trying a race one of these years? WHAT?! You didn’t even know there were inline races! We want to see you–no matter what response describes you.
We started as a group of pro inline racers who were sick of team skates with the guys where it ends up being a race instead of training. “Chick Skates” were born–no drop skates where we are nice to each other and practice paceline techniques and work on form and socializing more than speed.
We split into two groups with one ‘seasoned skater’ leading each group. The speed is slightly dependent on who shows up, but these are no-drop so you won’t be left in the dust. In general the first group goes around 15 mph or so, the second group 10-12 mph.
Two rules only:
1. Helmets required 2. Anyone has the right to tell the group to slow down.
Where to meet:
We meet at 5:00 on the last Sunday of the Month (April to September) in Minneapolis by the Greenway Trail. Google Map to Parking. Street parking is available on S. Abbott Ave–just behind Whole foods. Just look for a group of women on in-lines and be ready to skate at 5:00.
Course:
We skate an 11 mile loop, with one stop in the middle to regroup. Then, there’s an option to add a 5-9 mile out and back skate along the Greenway if you want to add a few more miles. All but 3 blocks of the skate are on bike trails. There are quite a few road crossings. You’ll want to be have some experience skating this distance and be comfortable braking and slowing down before you join us. (Anyone who is interested in skate instruction, Robichons Skate School is the best!)
Any questions–just show up and give us a try. We are committed to increasing the visibility of women skaters. Skating should be hard work and fun!
