The EPA’s War on Ice Rinks

“The cost of hockey just went up.”

Of the more than 200 indoor ice rinks in Minnesota, 120 of them each face the legal requirement of up to $1,000,000.00 in expenses in order to remain compliant with the ever growing reach of the United Nations and big government meddling.  A coolant, known as R-22, used to keep the ice frozen in Minnesota ice rinks for the past 40 years is now to be phased out in compliance with “international law.”  The cost of ice time across Minnesota has grown tremendously, and will only go higher as rinks scramble to adapt to ineffective and unnecessary bureaucratic bumbling.

According to the EPA, in 1987 the Montreal Protocol, an international environmental agreement, established requirements that began the worldwide phaseout of ozone-depleting CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). These requirements were later modified, leading to the phaseout in 1996 of CFC production in all developed nations. In 1992 the Montreal Protocol was amended to establish a schedule for the phaseout of HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons).

HCFCs are less damaging to the ozone layer than CFCs, but still contain allegedly ozone-destroying chlorine (as does every swimming pool on the face of the Earth). The Montreal Protocol as amended is carried out in the U.S. through Title VI of the Clean Air Act, which is implemented by the EPA.  HCFC-22 (also known as R-22) has been the refrigerant of choice for residential heat pump, air-conditioning systems, and Minnesota’s beloved ice rinks for more than four decades.

As if the expense wasn’t bad enough, the EPA admits that the substitute it approved for R-22 will still be bad for the environment.  90% of the rinks in need of up to $1,000,000.00 in compliance retrofitting are city owned.  Tax payers will be faced with the prospect of even higher taxes or no ice rinks.  For those that opt to keep the ice rink, short track speedskaters, figure skaters, hockey players, even curlers, can expect higher ice time expenses.  This will lead to fewer parents being able to afford to have little Timmy be an ice skater.  All this and so much more to comply with those who falsely worship at the shrine of Al Gore.
