Red Bull Crashed Ice Photos

Friday January 13, 2012

Thousands of spectators crowded into the shadows of the Cathedral to witness one of the more unusual Twin Cities athletic spectacles in recent memory.  Friday was the qualifying round for Saturday nights Red Bull Crashed Ice Championship Event.  Photos and television coverage fail to convey the speed at which the skaters are moving.  Photos and television also fail to convey the dramatic changes in elevation.

Sources inside the medical tent confirm many serious leg and head injuries.  Tonight we witnessed a skater crash through the plywood barrier and leave the course – in one of the photos you can see workers patching the hole (with plywood that was surprisingly at the ready).

Temperatures last weekend were at or near 50 degrees, but tonight brought single digits.  So if you plan to attend, dress accordingly.  If it’s too cold for you, NBC will be broadcasting the event on January 21, and local establishments are web-streaming the raw footage. My high school and college pal, Rusty Kath (who you may know from Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Rays, or Saint Paul Saints games), could be heard calling the play-by-play  from the press box at the finish line.
